Old Testament Part II: Comparative Studies

In the previous episode, we discussed the material of the Old Testament (aka Tanakh or Hebrew Bible). This time, we will be moving on to discuss the higher level conceptual world of the Ancient Near East and its influence on the biblical authors. Specifically, we look at the idea of a “divine council” present in Biblical texts such as Psalm 82. “God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods, he holds judgement.”

Key Takeaways

  • Context is bigger than material witness
  • Parallel =/= Plagiarism
  • Modern labels of polytheism, henotheism, monotheism do not accurately capture ancient Israelite theology
