The Bible, like all works of written communication, leaves many elements implicit to be filled in by the audience’s assumptions. To cooperate with the author, we need to reconstruct, as best as possible, the shared world (or cognitive environment) of the original author and audience. One important tool is comparing literature from the same cognitive environment.
