Dyspareunia is genital pain during or after sexual intercourse that can be medically or psychologically induced. The women in the article were experiencing dyspareunia due to overactive pelvic floor muscles. Basically, their bodies were involuntarily trying to clamp the vagina shut and not let their husband’s penis in. Women who survive sexual assault often present in this way, but, as stated, these women were not assaulted. The leading hypothesis is that the cycle of shame and fear instilled by their Christian upbringing resulted in this psychologically induced condition. By meditating on the Song of Songs and the positive view of sexuality therein, one can cultivate a healthier relationship with sexuality and help prevent or reduce this pain.
